Meet our Creative Director | Q & A with Holly from Komorebi Creative
We sit down and chat with Holly, founder of Komorebi Creative the creative director and photographer behind Raie Eyewear’s most recent campaign. Images were shot on location in Bali, Indonesia.
It’s been such an amazing adventure for you with your photography, tell us how did your love for photography first come to life and what initially inspired you to start shooting beautiful product photography?
I studied graphic design and through the course, I realised how much of a passion I had for photography. I had to shoot a product for one of my assessments and found myself really enjoying not just taking the photo, but also placement of lighting and product and how those two things together can change the entire feel of a picture. From there, I continued taking product shots and started following inspiring photographers which added fuel to this passion.
what has been your biggest highlight to date?
I recently was asked to take part in a short film that would entail myself taking photos of a model. Product photography gives you freedom as a new photographer, to set up in your own house, and take photos in your own company, with the willingness and freedom to make mistakes and not feel the pressures of being on a shoot or having other people being involved. Being a part of this film opened me up to the opportunity to learn what it was like to be under a pressured situation, and also to direct a shoot and model on my own. To be honest, I was pretty nervous. When it got to the day, I realised how ready I was to be on this scene. It was effortless and fun. This is a massive highlight for me, as I realised how capable I am to do this, and how happy it makes me.
Based in Collaroy, NSW how do you feel living in the laidback spot of the Collaroy reflects on your creative processes?
Waking up basically on the beach every morning obviously impacts my style massively. I think it’s a big reason why I love using natural light and a very neutral colour palette.
You continue to amaze us with beautiful campaigns. Can you tell us about the inspiration for the Raie Eyewear shoot? How did it all come together?
My initial thought when I saw the Raie Eyewear Sunglasses was that these were so 70’s. I wanted to bring that to life through these photos. I also didn’t want the photos to look static, I think it's so important to have movement, to make people feel like they are there, these are their sunnies on the table. I don’t really have a creative process when it comes to shooting, I just grab a few things that I think will make it work, and then I play around. More often than not I end up with something completely different to what I started off with. I used a metal wire really close up to the lens so that it caught the light and created these sporadic light pops in the pictures, which I think really creates this sense of movement.
What are your favourite local brands?
I love assembly label, Yoli and Otis, Zulu and Zephyr, Temple Of The Sun, Ayu, Cools Club, Smack Bang Designs, Elvis et moi, the Bilboa Loft, the only, so many.
What part of your job would people find most surprising?
That I just wake up, throw a sheet on a chair in my backyard, place some things on that chair, and take some photos. The process is definitely not as glamorous as the photos!
Who would you like to have a 30-minute meeting with?
I love Sasha Samsonova’s photography, I would love to learn more about her and her photography style.
What do you do when you are feeling uninspired?
Listen to music, go on some of my favourite Instagram pages, Pinterest, Behance, or just start shooting and roll with it.
Who do you love to follow on Instagram?
Best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I have ever received is that not everyone follows the same path, so don’t feel as though you need to do the same as other people to achieve your goals.
Thanks so much for sharing Holly!
Much Love xx
